Rendanheyi (人单合一): definition
*Rendanheyi (人单合一, pinyin rén dān hé yī, also written RenDanHeYi or RDHY) is a management model introduced by Zhang Ruimin at the Haier Group in 2005, in which each person is joined directly to the value they create for an identified user, and the firm is decomposed into self-governing micro-enterprises answerable to their own users.* In the 561 Group it is the kernel of the intended design: the practice that decides who answers to whom, and from what a unit's income and authority derive.
What do the characters mean?
人 (rén) is the person, the individual employee or maker. 单 (dān) is the user's value: not a sales order in the accounting sense, but the specific need of an identified user that the person's work exists to meet. 合一 (hé yī) is "to be made one". The claim is that person and user value should not be two objects joined by a chain of managers but one object. Haier's formulation of the pay consequence is 薪酬来自用户: salary comes from users.
Haier's annual report defines the terms in similar words: "Ren" refers to creators, "Dan" to user value, and "Heyi" to the integration of values realized by employees and values created for users. Haier's reports describe the enterprise becoming an open ecosystem platform.
What are its main parts?
| Term | Chinese | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Micro-enterprise | 小微 xiǎo wēi | The basic operating unit: a small self-governing enterprise with its own accounts, hiring, pay distribution and user contract (see micro-enterprise) |
| Three rights | 三权 sān quán | Decision, personnel and distribution rights delegated in full |
| Value-adjustment wager | 对赌 duì dǔ | A two-sided contract: upside if the target is beaten, material loss if missed |
| User-derived pay | 人单酬 rén dān chóu | Pay as a function of user value; value-added pay falls to zero when no value is created |
| Grabbing the order | 抢单 qiǎng dān | Any party may bid to lead a unit |
| Mutual selection | 官兵互选 guān bīng hù xuǎn | The team may remove its leader |
Haier's taxonomy names market micro-enterprises that face end users, node micro-enterprises that serve other micro-enterprises, and incubating micro-enterprises that pursue a user that does not yet exist for the firm.
What is it not?
Rendanheyi is not decentralization or a flat structure as such; it replaces hierarchy with a market, which is a more demanding arrangement than an absence of authority. It is not employee empowerment, which is an attitude the company cultivates, whereas Rendanheyi changes who pays. It is not agile or lean practice, which governs how work is done within a unit, while Rendanheyi governs what a unit is and where its income comes from.
What is the evidence?
Almost all of the quantitative evidence is Haier's own. In a 2015 press release marking the tenth anniversary of the model, Haier reported almost 200 internal micro-enterprises, of which it said 77 percent realized more than CNY 100 million in annual revenue in 2014. A 2016 Haier news item reported more than 3,800 micro-enterprise nodes. These are self-reported; no independent audit of those figures was read in Lenticule Science's survey, and no independent measurement of micro-enterprise survival or failure rates was found. Academic analysis characterizes Rendanheyi as a platform of management practices through which Haier moved from a hierarchical manufacturer to a responsive online entrepreneurial company, and argues that such innovations are context-dependent (Frynas et al. 2018)1 Jedrzej George Frynas, Michael J. Mol, and Kamel Mellahi. "Management Innovation Made in China: Haier's Rendanheyi." California Management Review 61, no. 1 (2018): 71-93..
How does the 561 Group use it?
The Group applies the structure to agents: an agent is a micro-enterprise only if its authority, cost and recognition attach to independently received user value. It extends the idea downward (every script as a micro-enterprise) and upward (a self-governing settlement called an agentic metro-enterprise). It does not claim that Haier or Huawei endorse this combination, and it does not claim measured results. See Rendanheyi for AI agents, Rendanheyi is a Hoare program and the agentic metro-enterprise.
